Electrotherapy for Chronic Pain Treatment

What is Electrotherapy? It is a method of treating chronic pain with electrical currents by placing electrodes on the skin. It uses energy waves to produce desired chemical and physiological effects in the body. Electrotherapy has been used to treat chronic pain for over 100 years. Listed below are the the two most common variety of stimulation types:

NMES (Neuro-Muscular Electro-Stimulation) also known as Electro-Muscular Stimulation or EMS that is used in rehabilitation.

TENS (Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation) that is used for pain therapy.

Electrotherapy has three main uses in chronic pain treatment:

  • Pain Relief
  • Chemical Change
  • Muscle Contraction

All three uses provide desirable results for chronic sufferers by instantly relieving the pain, promoting healing and increasing blood flow to the area.

Although most electrotherapy treatments occur in the doctor or physical therapy office, some people choose to purchase the equipment themselves to provide home relief.  If this is the path you choose, please do so under the supervision of a medical professional.
