Medical Conditions Suitable for Chiropractic Treatment

Medical Conditions Suitable for Chiropractic Treatment

There are several medical conditions that are suitable for chiropractic treatment, not just back pain and slipped or herniated discs.  In fact, some, such as allergies, would not normally be associated with chiropractics, yet many conditions that involve neural pathways are treatable using chiropractic therapy.  Here is a range of conditions that can be treated using non-invasive manipulative therapy.

Neck and Back Pain

The treatment of back pain, and other problems associated with the spine, is a classic application of chiropractics. Many spinal problems can be resolved using manipulative therapy much more effectively that by surgery.  A classic case is that of the bulging or herniated disc in the lumbar or cervical vertebrae. Often referred to as a slipped disc, the disc has not slipped because it is firmly attached to the vertebrae, but has actually ruptured.

A vertebral disc consists of a spongy shock-absorbent gel, the nucleus pulposus, surrounded by a tough annular sheath. Occasionally the gel will lose its strength, often through age or stresses on the spine, and rupture through the sheath creating a condition known as a herniated disc.  If the gel simply presses against the inside of the annulus and creates a lump, it is known as a bulging disc. The hernia or bulge can press against a nerve and cause extreme pain.

This can occur in the cervical vertebrae of the neck or the lumbar vertebrae of the lower back, and although surgery can be used to cut out the disc and then fuse the vertebrae together, chiropractics can offer a far better solution in IDD Therapy (intervertebral differential dynamic therapy). This non-invasive technique gently creates a pressure differential between the vertebrae that causes the disc to expand like a bellows and suck in nutrients and water to enable the rupture to heal with an average 86% success rate.

Carpel Tunnel Syndrome

CTS is caused by a pinched nerve in the tunnel of bones formed by the carpals in the wrist. Chiropractic care involves manipulation of the upper spine, elbow and wrist and also ultrasound therapy. There have been two studies carried out involving 25 and 91 individuals that have reported significant improvements in the condition after chiropractic treatment.

The second, involving 91 people, came to the conclusion that chiropractics was at least as effective as conventional treatment involving drugs and wrist supports. The condition can be caused by a misalignment in the spine, hence the manipulation of the upper spine and neck being part of the treatment.

Joint Problems

There are a number of causes of joint dysfunction, including osteoarthritis, degradation due to misaligned joints, disc problems and a few more. Chiropractic treatment can realign joints very effectively, and also resolve disc problems as discussed above. A lack of flexibility due to osteoarthritis can also be improved by manipulation with accompanying pain relief.

Whiplash Injuries

Whiplash symptoms include neck pain and stiffness, shoulder and arm pain, visual disturbances and headache. Physical chiropractic therapy can be used in conjunction with strengthening exercise to treat the damage caused, and the neck and spine can be adjusted to get you on the road to recovery.

Allergic reactions are caused by the immune system reacting to a trigger that it detects as being pathogenic. The processes that initiate the allergic reaction are passed through the neural system, down the spinal cord to the areas concerned.  Chiropractics can sometimes be used to help moderate the allergic reaction by working on the neuro-musculoskeletal system.

Pain, such as headaches and other neurological conditions, has many causes.  Sometimes chiropractic care can be used to moderate pain or eliminate it altogether, depending on its source. Common sources of pain that are treatable using chiropractics include trapped nerves, inflamed nerve roots and pressure being exerted on a nerve by, for example, a herniated disc or misaligned bones.  Each of these can be resolved by means of manipulative therapy, where traditional medicine would normally offer you a painkiller or some other drug.

If you have been involved in an accident that could have resulted in misalignment of the bones in your spine or damage to your neural system then chiropractic treatment could help. Realignment of bones or gentle manipulation of areas of the spine could reduce nerve inflammation and debilitating pain.

There are many other conditions suitable for chiropractic treatment, not all medical. In fact, even if you feel fully fit a chiropractic check-up can often detect irregularities in your spine and joints that might not be causing you problems now, but will at some time in the future. It is not uncommon for spinal disorders to be detected and rectified long before they have been able to impact on the patient’s health.

The upshot is that chiropractic care can be used to treat a variety of conditions, some with no immediately obvious connection with the area being treated.  That is because the neurological system operates in such a way that pain can be felt in a part of your body some distance away from the source of the problem.  That is one reason why conventional medicine can sometimes miss the problem altogether, and treat a symptom rather than the cause. Not so with chiropractic treatment.

Depression Causes, Types and Treatment

Depression Causes, Types and Treatment

Depression is a “whole-body” illness, involving your body, mood, and thoughts. It affects the way you eat and sleep, the way you feel about yourself, and the way you think about things. A depressive disorder is not the same as a passing blue mood. It is not a sign of personal weakness or a condition that can be willed or wished away. People with a depressive illness cannot merely “pull themselves together” and get better.

Causes of Depression

Environmental Situations – Certain environmental situations, such as stress or breakup of important attachments, also may precipitate depression, especially in vulnerable persons.

Stress – Some people become depressed through being overwhelmed by change and stress. We live in a time of rapidly increasing change and the demands of adjustment are difficult. Too much of an adjustment in too short of a time may over burden a person. Stress begins to wear them out and there is a loss of resiliency. They can no longer bounce back from adversity. They begin to pull away from others and their energy decreases. Depression is the result.

Genetic Link – There is evidence that suggests a genetic link to depression. Children, siblings and parents of people with severe depression are much more likely to suffer from depression than are members of the general population. Multiple genes interacting with one another in special ways probably contribute to the types of depression that runs in families. Scientists have not been able to identify a “depression” gene.

Psychiatric disorders – Affective disordersare typically characterized by abrupt mood swings from depression to elation (mania) or by prolonged episodes of either mood. In fact, severe depression may last for weeks. More moderate depression occurs in cyclothymic disordersand usually alternates with moderate mania. Moderate depression that’s more or less constant over a 2-year period typically results from dysthymic disorders. Also, chronic anxiety disorders, such as panic and obsessive-compulsive disorder, may be accompanied by depression.

Symptoms of Depression

1) Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism

2) Feelings of guilt, worthlessness and helplessness

3) Thoughts of suicide or death.

4) Trouble thinking, recalling things or focusing on what you’re doing

5) Trouble making everyday decisions.

6) Think and speak more slowly than normal.

7) Complain about problems that don’t have a physical cause, such as headache and stomachache.

8) Diminished interest in and enjoyment of previously pleasurable activities-sex, sports, hobbies, going out with friends, etc.

Treatment of Depression

Psychotherapy is considered just as effective as antidepressant medication and a combination of the two is usually the most effective. There are different forms of psychotherapy. Cognitive behavioral therapy helps break negative, distorted patterns of thinking.

Cranical electrotherapy stimulation.- The brain is both a chemical and electrical machine. It produces neurotransmitters to control electrical outputs throughout the body. Alpha-Stim® treats depression, anxiety, and insomnia with tiny electrical currents similar to those found naturally in the body, using a method called cranical electrotherapy stimulation.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – This therapy (CBT) involves the treatment of depression, anxiety and any sort of mental illness.Cognitive therapy is based on how thought processes work, depressed people are more inclined towards negative thought. They have a feeling of failure in them and therapists try to change the thought process towards the positive side. It is very important for the therapist to be patient while listening to the patients. Reports and data suggest that this therapy is very effective and people who take it have minimal chances of relapse.

Application of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine in the cases of Autism or Autistic Spectrum Disorder

Application of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine in the cases of Autism or Autistic Spectrum Disorder

Autism is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder that begins at birth or within the first two-and-a-half years of life.12It is a spectrum disorder (Autistic Spectrum Disorder / ASD), meaning that it affects people differently.  Some children may have speech, whereas others may have little or no speech.13 Most autistic children are perfectly normal in appearance, but spend their time engaged in puzzling and disturbing behaviors which are markedly different from those of typical children. Less severe cases may be diagnosed with Pervasive Developmental Disorder (PDD) or with Asperger’s Syndrome (these children typically have normal speech, but they have many “autistic” social and behavioral problems).12

Its cause is still a mystery, neurological studies seem to indicate a brain dysfunction.01The basis of the disorder may be neurochemical, neurotransmitters, neurobiological (genetic basis), neuropsychological or neurophysiological (dysfunction of complex information processing).02

In Autistic / ASD patients the transmission of impulses / signals (i.e. information processing) between nerve cells in the brain can not process properly or neurons (nerve cells) can not establish  their  accurate coordination accordingly between each other to connect the neural circuit through its rich neural network. Therefore, due to this reason autistic / ASD children sufferer develop various problems.

Autism /ASD is characterized by deficits in language, social communication, symbolic or imaginative play,03cognition and less or no eye contact.Children with autism / ASD usually have secondary problems in behaviour including aggression, irritability, stereotypies, hyperactivity, negativism, volatile emotions, temper tantrums, short attention span and obsessive-compulsive behavior.02

But, the good news is that there are now a wide variety of treatment options which can be very helpful. Some treatments may lead to great improvement. Now, Autism is treatable.04In such condition, acupuncture along with herbal therapy is highly effective. Excellent results are being achieved through simultaneous application of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine in the cases of ASD / Autism and Cerebral Palsy in different countries of the world.

There are several research papers, articles etc. that has been published all over the world about the efficacy of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicines. Below are some of the mentionable quotations / statements, cited from those documents in favour of effectiveness of these methods of treatment.

About the Acupuncture Therapy:

01. The use of Acupuncture in neurological and developmental disorders has been increasing lately to a great extent. The World Health Organization (WHO) reviewed and standardized scalp Acupuncture (to treat neurological and developmental problems) in 1984. In 1988, the WHO published the first standard pamphlet on scalp Acupuncture.05

02. Better cognitive (speech, memory, and calculation stimuli) performance achieved by the latter group was due to the added effect of the acupuncture sessions, which increased the blood-flow velocity to the brain.03

The majority had functional improvement of various degrees, depending on the age and severity of their disabilities. Some improvement was noticeable within a few Acupuncture sessions.03

03. Acupoints on the scalp and body have been found effective for treating children with brain dysfunction, resulting in improvement in the patient’s overall functional abilities.02

In a revolutionary new treatment, our research team has demonstrated for the first time in a clinical trial how acupuncture can successfully improve the dysfunction related to autism, by activating vital connections in the brain. We hypothesize that repetitive stimulation of specific acupoints can reconnect the neural circuit through its rich neural network to the cerebellum. Improvement may result through the resignaling of the neural circuits via neurotransmitters, like serotonin / 5-HT, dopamine and neurochemicals like cortisol. This reconnection of the cerebellar-frontal-temporal circuits may reverse the basic dysfunctional pathways in autism, including attention, emotion, or hyperactivity, and open up a positive road for learning communicative or cognitive skills.02

04. Many studies conducted all over the world targeting humans and animals have shown that scalp Acupuncture is very effective in treating developmental and neurological diseases in children. Research shows that the level of certain hormones in the body and cerebral blood flow improves with this type of treatment.06

05. “In that study, the researchers used body acupuncture for a longer period than the current study. Concluding that there was significant speech improvement in 12 of the studied (out of 13) CP subjects.07

About the Herbal Therapy:

01) Herb Bacopa has been used in several cases of Autism with positive effects 08

02) Two chemicals in Bacopa Herb, bacosides A and B, improve the transmission of impulses between nerve cells in your brain. These bacosides regenerate synapses and repair damaged neurons, making it easier to learn and remember new things. Bacopa also increases level of serotonin, a brain chemical known to promote relaxation. The herb’s ability to boost brain function while reducing anxiety may explain why it helps treat ADHD, ASD”. There was significant improvement in Verbal learning, Memory consolidation, Early information processing09

03) Herbs Gingo bilobaimproves blood supply to the brain and also increases the rate at which information transmitted at nerve cells.10

04) The reconstruction of neuronal networks in the damaged brain is necessary for the therapeutic treatment of neurodevelopmental-degenerative diseases. Herb Ginseng showed potent regeneration activity for axons and synapses, and amelioration of memory impairment. Also showed neurite extension in normal and damaged cortical neurons. Trigonelline, a constituent of Coffee Beans demonstrated the regeneration of dendrites and axons, in addition to memory improvement.11
